- Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris
Great special at Saseka Teneted Camp, Thornybush Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger. Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris Luxury Tented Walking Trails Camp in a Private Concession in The Kruger National Park rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-1.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-10.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-sleep-out-3.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-1.jpg 1/21 Location Private Concession in the Kruger National Park. DESCRIPTION: Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is located on the Mutlumuvi concession in the Kruger National Park, half an hour’s safari game drive from Skukuza Airport. The concession consists of 12 000 hectares of wilderness area just inside the un-fenced western boundary that separates the Kruger from the Mala Mala and Sabi Sand Game reserves. While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. The Plains Camp expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike. The bush walks are all accompanied by two highly qualified and armed rangers who understand animal behaviour and territorial boundaries and will share their wealth of bush knowledge with you – from the animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds you might see to the medicinal uses of plants, basic tracking and survival skills. Between walks, which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, take pleasure in the solitude of a hidden camp. The camp is built from canvas and wood with beautiful antiques and silverware giving it the elegance of a bygone era. It overlooks the Timbetene Plain where plains game roams freely, and elephants are seen daily. This positioning allows guests to enjoy unhindered views of animals grazing and interacting without being noticed. Rhino Walking Safaris operates from Plains Tented Camp which only caters for a maximum of eight people (no children under 12), so you are ensured of a quality, pristine wilderness away from the crowds! There are 4 luxury, more than comfortably furnished African explorer-style tents with en-suite bathrooms (hot water)that offer all the necessary comforts whilst avoiding unnecessary luxury - all linen is 100% cotton percale, there are gorgeous down duvets and furnishings of a very high quality, including numerous antiques and a variety of guest amenities are provided. Built in authentic pioneer tradition, it creates the ambience of a 19th century naturalist’s retreat - take in an Africana book collection and antique treasures reminiscent of a golden bygone era. The lodge’s tents and public areas are raised on wooden decks – the tents are constructed purely from canvas and wood, with no trees having been chopped down in keeping with operating company Isibindi Africa’s ethic of “treading lightly on the land”. This camp is specifically designed for low energy consumption and makes use of a generator and a back-up battery system, which power overhead fans and 24 hour lighting (also used to re-charge camera batteries). The communal area includes a lounge and dining area with an outside fireplace for cold evenings and small plunge pool – perfect for chilling those sore muscles after a long walk! A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee (or tea) and traditional homemade rusks, after which you set out on your morning walk - following rhino tracks and elephant paths! Trails are structured by the rangers taking into consideration the fitness levels of the group (usually 3-4 hours in length) and avoid the heat of midday. After a delicious brunch, afternoons are spent enjoying and relaxing in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole where a stream of animals coming to drink will keep you enthralled. After the heat of the middle of the day is passed, you will set out again in the late afternoon to explore again on foot or take a game drive. Dining is an elegant affair in keeping with the nostalgic ambiance with your table set with crisp linen and silver - food is all homecooked, fresh and delicious! There are different ‘layers’ to experiencing the bush. The first and most commonly done is to go out on game drives looking for bigger animals and changing landscapes. The second, for serious bush-lovers and connoisseurs – or those looking for a closer to nature experience – is that of seeing everything from the ground. Walking, taking in the sights, sounds and scents of nature – even tasting wild fruits, and learning about the little things sometimes missed while on a drive; not to mention experiencing the thrill of seeing the big game on foot. With a four-hour morning walk and shorter late afternoon walk combined with a brief game drive, there is plenty of opportunities to get the most out of this experience. RATE INCLUDES: Transfer from Rhino Post Safari Lodge to Plains Camp at 14h00 on day of arrival Transfer from Plains Camp to Rhino Post Safari Lodge at approximately 11h00 on day of departure Early morning tea/coffee and a light snack before the morning walk Morning walk including juice, water and snacks Brunch on return from the morning activity at approximately 10h00 High Tea at 15h30 – substantial sweet and savoury dishes, plus tea, coffee, water or juice Afternoon walk and evening game drive including a bottle of water, sundowner drink (beer, wine by the glass, sherry or a soft drink) and sundowner snacks Bar snacks Dinner (served at approximately 20h30) Coffee and Tea after dinner HIGHLIGHTS: Talking of different experiences, another stunning option (at extra cost) is to spend an unforgettable night out under the stars at the concession’s Sleep-Out camp - sleeping outdoors, under the stars on elevated wooden platforms 4 metres high. You will arrive on foot and after hanging up your mosquito net and preparing your bed on the platforms which overlook a waterhole, you can relax and enjoy the sunset. As the night settles you can appreciate the sounds and other senses of the African bush, whilst sipping a refreshing sundowner, while your guide prepares a braai on an open blazing fire. Then it is time to retire to your individual platform where you may be serenaded to sleep by the whooping of a hyena or the roar of a distant (or perhaps not so distant!) lion! OUR TIPS: We find that the walking camp makes a great combo with its more conventionally luxurious sister camp, Rhino Post, which is centred around vehicle based game drives. So you could for example spend a couple of nights at Rhino Post before moving across to the Plains Camp for the walking experience – this way you get to enjoy 2 completely different experiences. - Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge
Great discounts at Lush Private Game Reserve in the Pilanesberg Reserve. Great safari deal. Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge Game Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve buffalo-ridge-bathroom-2jpg buffalo-ridge-bathroom-2jpg 1/12 Location Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province, South Africa Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the country's fourth largest game reserve and home to the Big 5 and a host of other game. DESCRIPTION: Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is situated on the Tweedepoort Ridge overlooking the plains and inselbergs of the western section of Madikwe Game Reserve. Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is a 16-bed luxury facility designed by Nick Plewman, an acclaimed small lodge designer. The lodge is situated at a prime site in the west of the Madikwe Game Reserve, straddling the Tweedepoort Ridge with expansive views across the northern plains and Inselbergs. The central lodge sits on the slopes of a hill across a ravine, separating it from the chalets. Each of the chalets is positioned on the ridge with expansive views to the north. The main lodge is spectacularly located on two tiers of the ridge and is accessed via a wooden bridge that crosses a ravine surrounded by rock figs. Each of the living areas has its own character, mood and style providing guests with a choice of breathtaking views and tranquil spaces. The other stand-out about Buffalo Ridge is its intimacy and seclusion. With only eight suites in total, there’s a very definite feeling of exclusivity to the lodgings, and as the chalets are built on a separate tier to the main lodge you get a distinctive feeling of having your very own personal suite right in the bush. Each chalet follows this theme of making you feel like a VIP: these thatched suites each have their own private viewing deck. The rooms themselves are spacious and neat with simple and quite rustic décor touches. Thatch roofing and soft sandy tones work beautifully with the set rock inlay of the walls and the chalet’s authentic indigenous wooden counters and pillars to inspire a feeling of being a part of nature. This feeling is underscored by the design’s focus on openness and airiness: sliding doors open out fully on to a deck with seating where you can relax and admire the views; the walk-in showers also add to this feeling of spaciousness. EXCELLENT GAME VIEWING The game-viewing at Buffalo Ridge is superb, much like most safari lodges in Madikwe – but what makes Buffalo Ridge different are the rangers. Locally sourced and trained from the community, they show an obvious love for this, their home. The Big Five are all present and accounted for, as well as plains game (zebra and antelope in droves!), and none of them escape the professionalism eye and bush skill of your guides. These rangers – in fact, all the staff – show a keen knowledge of local flora, fauna and history. Whether you want to know more about the elephant herd you just saw or about what the history of the Balete tribe is, you’ll always be able to find an interesting answer, delivered with a smile. As an added bonus, the Madikwe reserve is utterly free from malaria which is a big plus for families especially. Speaking of which, Buffalo Ridge is a lodge where kids are genuinely welcome! Nambiti Plains Luxury Safari Lodge in the Big 5 Nambiti Reserve, KwaZulu Natal. 1/24 Location Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve, KwaZulu Natal DESCRIPTION: Nambiti Plains is situated in the beautiful and diverse landscape of Nambiti Private Game Reserve, a private Big Five bush retreat and game conservancy set on 22,000 acres of malaria-free bushveld in just east of Ladysmith in close proximity to the Drakensberg and within fairly easy driving distance of both Johannesburg and Durban. The lodge is set on a gentle slope with views out over the rolling plains of Nambiti with a nearby waterhole. Each suite is completely secluded and hugely spacious and comes equipped with romantic mosquito nets, overhead fans. Immerse yourself with 180 degree panoramic views from the bath, outdoor "bush shower" (in the Honeymoon Suites), and private wrap around viewing deck. The massive bathrooms have twin basins framed by old tree trunks and there’s a gorgeous standalone bath which could almost feel outside once you slide back the huge floor-to-ceiling sliding doors! The Luxury Suites are two separate semi-detached rooms per unit, separated by a solid, packed stone wall with a common entrance and also offer families space to enjoy the beautiful views of the bush. The main lodge follows a similar traditional game lodge design style with its thatched roofs and wooden viewing deck – the stone-packed feature walls are particularly attractive. The lodge's emphasis is on a modern yet eco-friendly minimalist approach with the lodge also located right in the bush with no manicured gardens, thereby reducing the impact on the surrounding environment. The lodge has glassed sliding doors, overhead fans and screened floors which ensure you stay cool in summer while large, beautifully constructed packed stone fire places in the bar, lounge and dining room. The lounge area with its huge fireplace is a great spot to relax on a comfy sofa with a glass of good red wine on a chilly evening in front of a roaring fire! The lodge boasts a vast, expansive wrap-around deck complete with circular plunge pool - this is the ideal area to relax with an ice cold beer or chill out in the outdoor lounge as you watch animals quietly drinking and bathing in the waterhole in front of the lodge. You may find yourself sharing the pool with a herd of elephants as they have developed a taste for the swimming pool water over that of the waterhole! Qualified field guides take the morning and afternoon/evening game drives. Experience first-hand the thrill and excitement of tracking and locating wildlife, learn about the natural flora and fauna and view not only the big five but also cheetah, hippo, a vast array of bird species. You will have the opportunity to learn about the smaller animals, all of which come together to create this beautiful African ecosystem . PRICE INCLUDES: All meals Two Game Drives daily Accommodation in private luxury suite Teas, coffees, fruit juice at breakfast and snacks on game drive Morning coffee or tea and a sundowner drink per person per Game Drive HIGHLIGHTS Nambiti Plains Lodge is a small, intimate 5* Lodge that only accommodates 14 guests and is one of the few Lodges in the Nambiti Game Reserve that is not fenced in, meaning the guests have the opportunity to view animals up close and personal in camp OUR TIPS: The area around the game reserve was where the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars took place.
