Front-facing beds make the most of the sensational Delta views, while a spacious dressing area sits snugly behind the bed’s giant headboard, in between the bedroom and ensuite bathroom, to ensure the utmost privacy. The beautiful bathrooms come complete with indoor and alfresco showers. Game viewing in the Okavango Delta is remote and secluded, with very few vehicles sharing the private concession. Sensitive off-road driving practices allow our guests to get up close to the area’s exceptional wildlife. Afternoon drives continue after night, allowing for an opportunity to see the many animals that are more active at night, including leopard and serval. Lion frequently hunts at night and there is always a chance of coming upon them feeding on a kill. andBeyond’s professionally trained guides will ask you about your favourite wildlife and will do their best to ensure that your preferences are met, whether it is tracking a particular species or spending more time enjoying each sighting, getting to know the habits of the animals. They will also tell you about the vegetation of the region and will explain the behaviour of the animals that you come across. In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits. The Delta is probably best known for its Mokoro rides. These are boating trips through the maze-like channels and shallow lagoons of the Delta. They are conducted in traditional boats which are called Mokoros. These sturdy boats used to be handcrafted out of large Delta trees. Today most of the boats used in the Delta are fibreglass replicas, to prevent the cutting down and depletion of the Delta’s magnificent trees. Mokoros are a great way to go game viewing. As they are not motorized, they allow you to glide silently through the channels. This allows you to approach the wildlife silently and you will see more, as they are not scared off by a motor. You will see many animals that feed on the grass and reeds on the palm islands such as lechwe, sitatunga, elephant, hippo and crocodile. (seasonal - dependent on water levels) Game viewing is also offered in motorized boats. These trips allow you to cover more ground and should allow you to see more of the landscape, although some of the wildlife may be scared off by the motor. (seasonal - dependent on water levels) Thrill to an aerial view of the Okavango Delta as you soar above a vast maze of both permanent and fleeting waterways. Fly over rivers and pools dotted with lily pads, as well as a variety of wild animals that inhabit this unique habitat. The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world, the Okavango Delta is the most unexpected wonder – water present in a desert. The broad Okavango River sinks into the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating a lush and waterlogged oasis with crystal clear lagoons and channels, reeded islands and fertile floodplains. Dubbed “the river that never finds the sea”, this magical oasis spreads over more than 15 500 km² (almost 6 000 square miles) and yet is so fragile that, if it were denied water for even a decade, it would revert to a semi-desert. This breath-taking environment constantly adapts and changes with the ebb and flow of the floodwaters that seasonally inundate large portions of the Delta. Although dry for two-thirds of the year, during the winter months the rising floodwaters create a maze of marshes, small wooded islands and shallow lagoons. Water lilies and other aquatic plants flourish in the shallow water, while water birds inhabit the banks of papyrus. As relatively little water can be found elsewhere during this time, the wildlife is drawn to the clear waters of the Delta. On the edges of the Delta, where land blurs with water, breeding herds of elephant splash gently through shallow channels, the long necks of a family of giraffe materialise slowly out of the Delta skyline and graceful sitatunga antelope hide in the reeds. It is a place where you can wonder at the antics of wild dog in the morning and cast a line for tiger fish in the afternoon, wake in the dappled shade of a forest and enjoy dinner beneath the boughs of a massive baobab at full moon. Beautiful little reed frogs cling to the water grasses and a variety of incredible bird species make their appearance, from jewelled kingfishers and bee-eaters to ponderous herons and cranes and solemn-looking owls. Red lechwe scamper through the shallows and wild cat, serval and pangolin can be spotted at night, when the moon reflects off the backs of a family of hippo coming out of the water to graze, turning them into slabs of shining silver. Wildlife The Okavango Delta is home to a large number of species, including some that are specially adapted to the semi-aquatic lifestyle, like the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga antelope. Lion prides, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog may be encountered, while hippo resides in deeper channels and lagoons. Honey badgers are observed during daylight hours. Roan and sable antelope favour taller grass in open woodlands and families of dwarf and banded mongoose occupy large termite mounds. Graceful giraffe, with their impossibly long necks, and herds of zebra can be encountered on the floodplains. Lion, as well as other predators, can also be found in the area, particularly in the drier areas. Although predominantly nocturnal and difficult to spot, leopard occurs in the dense forest are the water’s edge. The sparkling channels teem with a variety of fish, while hundreds of bird species, frogs and insects inhabit the reeded banks. Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris Luxury Tented Walking Trails Camp in a Private Concession in The Kruger National Park rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-1.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-10.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-sleep-out-3.jpg rhino-walking-safaris-kruger-national-park-1.jpg 1/21 Location Private Concession in the Kruger National Park. DESCRIPTION: Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is located on the Mutlumuvi concession in the Kruger National Park, half an hour’s safari game drive from Skukuza Airport. The concession consists of 12 000 hectares of wilderness area just inside the un-fenced western boundary that separates the Kruger from the Mala Mala and Sabi Sand Game reserves. While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. The Plains Camp expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike. The bush walks are all accompanied by two highly qualified and armed rangers who understand animal behaviour and territorial boundaries and will share their wealth of bush knowledge with you – from the animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds you might see to the medicinal uses of plants, basic tracking and survival skills. Between walks, which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, take pleasure in the solitude of a hidden camp. The camp is built from canvas and wood with beautiful antiques and silverware giving it the elegance of a bygone era. It overlooks the Timbetene Plain where plains game roams freely, and elephants are seen daily. This positioning allows guests to enjoy unhindered views of animals grazing and interacting without being noticed. Rhino Walking Safaris operates from Plains Tented Camp which only caters for a maximum of eight people (no children under 12), so you are ensured of a quality, pristine wilderness away from the crowds! There are 4 luxury, more than comfortably furnished African explorer-style tents with en-suite bathrooms (hot water)that offer all the necessary comforts whilst avoiding unnecessary luxury - all linen is 100% cotton percale, there are gorgeous down duvets and furnishings of a very high quality, including numerous antiques and a variety of guest amenities are provided. Built in authentic pioneer tradition, it creates the ambience of a 19th century naturalist’s retreat - take in an Africana book collection and antique treasures reminiscent of a golden bygone era. The lodge’s tents and public areas are raised on wooden decks – the tents are constructed purely from canvas and wood, with no trees having been chopped down in keeping with operating company Isibindi Africa’s ethic of “treading lightly on the land”. This camp is specifically designed for low energy consumption and makes use of a generator and a back-up battery system, which power overhead fans and 24 hour lighting (also used to re-charge camera batteries). The communal area includes a lounge and dining area with an outside fireplace for cold evenings and small plunge pool – perfect for chilling those sore muscles after a long walk! A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee (or tea) and traditional homemade rusks, after which you set out on your morning walk - following rhino tracks and elephant paths! Trails are structured by the rangers taking into consideration the fitness levels of the group (usually 3-4 hours in length) and avoid the heat of midday. After a delicious brunch, afternoons are spent enjoying and relaxing in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole where a stream of animals coming to drink will keep you enthralled. After the heat of the middle of the day is passed, you will set out again in the late afternoon to explore again on foot or take a game drive. Dining is an elegant affair in keeping with the nostalgic ambiance with your table set with crisp linen and silver - food is all homecooked, fresh and delicious! There are different ‘layers’ to experiencing the bush. The first and most commonly done is to go out on game drives looking for bigger animals and changing landscapes. The second, for serious bush-lovers and connoisseurs – or those looking for a closer to nature experience – is that of seeing everything from the ground. Walking, taking in the sights, sounds and scents of nature – even tasting wild fruits, and learning about the little things sometimes missed while on a drive; not to mention experiencing the thrill of seeing the big game on foot. With a four-hour morning walk and shorter late afternoon walk combined with a brief game drive, there is plenty of opportunities to get the most out of this experience. RATE INCLUDES: Transfer from Rhino Post Safari Lodge to Plains Camp at 14h00 on day of arrival Transfer from Plains Camp to Rhino Post Safari Lodge at approximately 11h00 on day of departure Early morning tea/coffee and a light snack before the morning walk Morning walk including juice, water and snacks Brunch on return from the morning activity at approximately 10h00 High Tea at 15h30 – substantial sweet and savoury dishes, plus tea, coffee, water or juice Afternoon walk and evening game drive including a bottle of water, sundowner drink (beer, wine by the glass, sherry or a soft drink) and sundowner snacks Bar snacks Dinner (served at approximately 20h30) Coffee and Tea after dinner HIGHLIGHTS: Talking of different experiences, another stunning option (at extra cost) is to spend an unforgettable night out under the stars at the concession’s Sleep-Out camp - sleeping outdoors, under the stars on elevated wooden platforms 4 metres high. You will arrive on foot and after hanging up your mosquito net and preparing your bed on the platforms which overlook a waterhole, you can relax and enjoy the sunset. As the night settles you can appreciate the sounds and other senses of the African bush, whilst sipping a refreshing sundowner, while your guide prepares a braai on an open blazing fire. Then it is time to retire to your individual platform where you may be serenaded to sleep by the whooping of a hyena or the roar of a distant (or perhaps not so distant!) lion! OUR TIPS: We find that the walking camp makes a great combo with its more conventionally luxurious sister camp, Rhino Post, which is centred around vehicle based game drives. So you could for example spend a couple of nights at Rhino Post before moving across to the Plains Camp for the walking experience – this way you get to enjoy 2 completely different experiences. HIGHLIGHTS Botswana’s famous Chobe National Park is a must-see wildlife destination that includes the Savute Channel and natural beauty of the Linyanti River. Covering almost 11,000 km² (6,836 square miles), Chobe was Botswana’s first national park and remains one of its best, boasting the biggest concentration of wildlife in Africa. An oasis in a dry, at times desolate region, Chobe National Park’s Chobe River offers an irreplaceable lifeline to the reserve’s wildlife. The largest concentration of elephant in Africa occupies this park and, in the mid- to late-afternoon, herd after herd comes down to the Chobe banks, some small in number and others counting in the hundreds. Each takes its turn to drink the precious water, swim in the cool river or just jostle for position. Inland from the river is a semi-arid habitat, while around the oasis vegetation is abundant. Herds of sable antelope, mostly seen in the dry regions, can be spotted coming down to drink, only to disappear back into the drier areas. Special game sightings include the indigenous and endangered puku antelope that can only be seen along the Chobe River banks and in pockets in the Linyanti swamps, along with roan antelope, giraffe, kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, lion, leopard and the occasional African wild dog. Large herds of buffalo are found along the Chobe riverfront and grazing on the islands, crossing from one to the other or back to the mainland.
