  • Makweti Safari Lodge

Makweti Safari Lodge Luxury Safari Lodge in the Welgevonden Reserve, Waterberg. 1/14 Location 40,000 hectare Welgevonden Game Reserve, Waterberg Limpopo. DESCRIPTION: Located right in the centre of Welgevonden’s big five territory with sweeping views over the Makweti Gorge and a nearby water source, Makweti Safari Lodge offers a wonderful safari experience within 3 hours of Johannesburg. Makweti Safari Lodge has always been one of the smaller camps in the “big five” Welgevonden Game Reserve, proving that size is not a defining factor in the creation of unforgettable experiences. To be perfectly frank, it’s a prime advantage, offering guests the opportunity to find solitude, peace and the personal space to connect with nature, while viewing the exquisite, bustling wildlife in an untainted setting. Makweti’s Indaba Lounge is a perfectly positioned vantage point to take it all in, with views that extend across a natural flood plain and waterhole. A highlight of Makweti, this water source attracts animals of all sizes and stature as they casually traverse through the unfenced camp. The energy reaches an all-time high when local elephant herds decide to satiate their thirst with water from the guest pools, a spontaneous and breath-taking event. Five air-conditioned suites, built from African stone and thatch, are dotted around the main lodge, accessible by winding pathways through the natural bushveld. Each one accommodates two people and has an expansive, private deck facing one of Welgevonden’s glorious scenes, with four of the five suites being complete with a private plunge pool. All suites tend to the human need for comfort, with a healthy dose of luxury and indulgence. Melt into the king size beds (which can be exchanged for two twins), invigorate the senses with an outdoor (or indoor) shower, or warm up after a drive with a decadent soak in the Victorian bath tub as the chill rises off the land. Enjoy the crackle of an open fireplace in your suite, as you sip on treats from the minibar. Suites are further equipped with his and hers amenities, a hair dryer, air conditioners and an overhead fan. Twice daily game drives are conducted in the Malaria-free Welgevonden game reserve in open vehicles by qualified guides. The reserve is a natural home for Africa’s “Big Five” – elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. Makweti has no fences, so the Big Five, zebra, wildebeest, and a host of other iconic species wander freely through the Lodge’s surrounds. Often, these wild “owners of the terrain” come for refreshment to the stream-fed waterhole just 80 yards from the open lounge and viewing deck. Beyond the waterhole, Makweti’s luxury suites and dining room command panoramic views across a gorge-defined valley, toward infinite blue hills beyond. These views, and many other enchanting vistas, extend across one of Southern Africa’s largest private game reserves – a wilderness expanse of some 40,000 hectares. For Makweti’s guests, the reserve stands open in its entirety to wonder-filled exploration. Special SADC 10 Day Out Rate R4,950 per person per night sharing. Book within 10 days of travel. Valid until 31 December 2023 Standard Rate R7,000 per person per night sharing. SUBMIT ENQUIRY PRICE INCLUDES: Accommodation All meals 2 safaris a day with an expert guide VAT HIGHLIGHTS Makweti has two game vehicles and three dedicated, skillful guides for only ten guests, ensuring that no more than 6 guests ever share a game drive vehicle. OUR TIPS Makweti Safari Lodge is an experience for the discerning wildlife aficionado. Timelessly African, it embodies the eras of Livingstone and Hemingway, while standing as a model of modern, environmentally sensitive taste. The lodge is part of the by- invitation- only Chaîne des Rôtisseurs- a hallmark of fine cuisine.

Three eco-chic, luxury tents are perched on raised platforms overlooking a spectacle of untamed Okavango wilderness. Renowned as one of the most rewarding safari locations on Earth, and perhaps the most exclusive, Little Tubu accommodates just six guests, and offers the kind of game viewing you probably thought only existed in wildlife documentaries. Wilderness Little Tubu is situated on Hunda Island, the largest dry land environment in this area, hosts a mix of diverse habitats, ensuring a varied game viewing experience. Activities include day and night game drives through productive mopane and acacia woodlands. During winter (May to late September), boating, seasonal fishing and mokoro trips are also offered. Sightings around Wilderness Little Tubu includes elephants, lions, Burchell's zebra, red lechwe, southern giraffe, tsessebe, and blue wildebeest on the floodplains. Kudu, impala, bushbuck, and leopard are usually seen in the forested areas. The variety of birdlife is impressive, with dry-land species seen on the larger islands, and a multitude of wetland birds seen on the floodplains and waterways. Wilderness Little Tubu offers an exceptional, intimate bush experience with just three traditional-style tents – ideal for families or small groups. This classic Okavango setting and experience seemingly floats in the riverine tree canopy, and looks out over a seasonal riverbed which ebbs and flows with the passage of a variety of wildlife. Elevated walkways link the tents to the main dining, bar, and pool areas, integrated beautifully with the environment and taking full advantage of the alluring views over the floodplains. The camp is connected to nearby Wilderness Tubu Tree, its larger sister camp, by elevated boardwalks. Spend a memorable night in the camp’s hide, converted at night to a star bed, blanketed by the African heavens. Wilderness Little Tubu – Game Drives Morning and afternoon game drives reveal the spectacular wildlife that can be seen in the area. These are offered in open 4x4 vehicles each accommodating a maximum of seven people allowing each guest a "window" seat. Night drives with spotlights allow you to find those nocturnal animals you wouldn’t see during normal daytime drives. Porcupine, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and lesser bushbaby are just some of these. Wilderness Little Tubu – Mokoro Excursions * Experience the Okavango Delta gliding along in a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) which has been used by generations for transport in the region where there are many more serene channels than roads. This excursion is perfect for spotting tiny reed frogs or larger pods of hippos in the deeper water. * Water levels permitting. Wilderness Little Tubu – Boating * Discover by boat and search for water-based wildlife further afield. Good game viewing in the channels further away from camp often yield fabulous sightings of hippos and crocodiles, and maybe even the rare sitatunga. * Water levels permitting. Wilderness Little Tubu – Fishing * Fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment is on offer seasonally on a catch and release basis. * Note that fishing is seasonal as it is prohibited by Botswana law in January and February due to breeding purposes. Wilderness Little Tubu – Birding The mix of habitat ensures a variety of birdlife to be seen, from flocks of endangered wattled crane and glimpses of the rare lesser jacana on the eastern side, to Meyer’s parrots and Dickinson’s kestrel in the west. PRICE INCLUDES: Accommodation on a full board basis including twice daily scheduled camp activities, local drinks, laundry, park fees. Internal flights are available at a discounted rate of $220 per person per leg for SADC residents. HIGHLIGHTS Intimate camp "floating" in the tree canopy Range of activities thanks to diverse habitats, from dry land to water Leopards are found in good numbers, and plains game concentrations are excellent in winter OUR TIPS: Deeply personal and life changing, Little Tubu offers a safari experience like few others.
