Location

Mkambati Nature Reserve, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

DESCRIPTION:

The Wild Coast is a rugged and unspoiled stretch of coastline along the Indian Ocean. Its natural beauty attracts those seeking a more untouched and remote environment. For decades rustic rondavels at GweGwe hosted visitors to Mkambati. Now this spectacular site has been transformed into a luxury beach lodge that opens its doors end March 2024. Designed to blend into the environment, it offers laidback luxury, paired with locally inspired design.

GweGwe Beach Lodge sits within a sprawling 7,500-hectare private concession in the Mkambati Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape. Warm sea waters all year round, stunning scenery, and wildlife galore (the friendly kind, of course!) make this a wonderful destination. Pristine rivers, cascading waterfalls both inland and into the sea, deep gorges, lush grasslands, and serene beaches are all part of the natural landscape found at GweGwe.

At GweGwe Beach Lodge, there is something for everyone. The facilities and communal areas cater to diverse tastes and preferences. Plus, there's a rich tapestry of Pondo culture woven throughout, paying homage to the area's heritage. You'll find a central lounge, dining area, deck, and bar facing the sea, offering a tranquil retreat. And if you're in the mood for a more laid-back atmosphere, Riverside, a casual spot overlooking the lagoon and forest, is the place to be. There's plenty to keep you entertained, from the activity centre and curiosity corner to the kiddie's club.

Riverside's outdoor deck serves up delicious pizzas and braais, all with a breathtaking backdrop of the forest and lagoon. Need to work off those extra calories? Take in the views from our elevated gym, or unwind in the soothing ambience of our spa nestled amidst the forest. It's the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, all in one stunning location.

The lodge’s private concession is a protected area known for its diverse ecosystems, including coastal forests, grasslands, and riverine habitats, with so many fascinating pockets to explore. You’ll find plains game galore, and a plethora of birdlife, so grab your binoculars and prepare for bush adventure mixed with lots of beach action.

Mkambathi is perfect for families and couples; indeed, for anyone longing for an unspoilt coastal destination and for those who wish to experience the Wild Coast away from the crowds.
