About Addo Elephant Park Now South Africa's third largest national reserve, Addo Elephant National Park lies in the malaria-free Sundays River valley in the Eastern Cape, just over an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth and 9 hours’ drive from Cape Town (817km). The Park stretches from the semi-arid karoo of the north, over the Zuurberg Mountains and down through the Sundays River valley to the coast, to between the mouths of the Sundays and Bushman's rivers. Addo is home to one of the densest African Elephant populations on earth, roughly 550 of them. They once roamed the entire continent. By 1979 there were only 1.3 million African elephants left, and in 1989 they were added to the international list of the most endangered species, with only sixteen left in the Greater Addo area. The Elephants play a key role in the environment - pulling down trees, breaking up bushes, and digging waterholes and trails. Their droppings are particularly important as baboons and birds pick them over for undigested seeds and nuts, and the dung beetle (the flightless dung beetle is only found in Addo) use them in which to reproduce. More recently the Addo Elephant National Park has expanded to become the only park in the world to lay claim to Africa's 'Big 7' - elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale, and great white shark. It has done this by expanding along the coast from the Sundays River mouth towards Alexandria, and by adding an offshore marine reserve that includes St Croix Island and Bird Island, both essential breeding grounds for penguins and gannets. St Croix has the largest African penguin colony in the world. The Lodge is set in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve. It is an old farmhouse that after years of family laughter and happiness has been transformed into an inviting and relaxing residence that encourages guests to kick off their shoes and unwind. What makes The Bush House different? Perhaps it’s in the people who make you feel so warmly welcome, at the bar after your game drive, at the brunch table, or in the boma for dinner under the stars. The staff prides themselves on really caring for guests and being attentive to their needs. As an owner managed Lodge the personal touch is an integral part of the service. Perhaps it’s in the sense of the bushveld. The dust of the elephant herds, the closeness of the rhino, the fleeting glimpse of the leopard… or the massive power of the buffalo coming down to drink at the waterhole within meters of the front lawn. It could be the luxuries you enjoy. The sumptuous bushveld cuisine or the service so close you only have to lift a finger. Or maybe it’s more about the whole experience than a single sighting. More about the memories you made while you were one with nature as you pulled the bushveld around your shoulders like a blanket, and in a strange, familiar way you felt completely at home. The Bush House does not have to be booked out exclusively, each room can be sold individually. That’s why people come back to The Bush House. Again and again. For most of our guests it’s just like that, like coming home – even for the first time. There are six en-suite bedrooms. Four of them have private verandas where you can sit and contemplate the world, one overlooks the garden and waterhole with another having the soothing sounds of a water feature outside the sliding door. All rooms form part of the main lodge so there are no unnecessary long walks to your room. The Bush House Chefs, who together create a wonderful culinary repertoire, whether it is breakfast in the garden, afternoon tea packed with treats or a fire-lit dinner in the Boma under the stars. Enjoy relaxing in the large shaded garden overlooking the best waterhole in Madikwe. Lounge at the pool while the staff take care of your every need. Enjoy a friendly game of cricket, rugby or soccer on the lawn. SUBMIT ENQUIRY PRICE INCLUDES: All meals Two game drives daily (off road driving is permitted) Teas & coffees Complimentary Wi-Fi HIGHLIGHTS An exciting addition to our offering is an underground hide that borders on the very edge of our most active waterhole. A water point is located close to the front opening and elephants regularly drink from this point or walk right past the front of The Hide. The roof which is just above ground level is reinforced and can carry the weight of any elephant that might wander across the top. The Hide is accessed from a path within the Lodge garden, or from the swimming pool, so guests can safely move along the walkway and into the tunnel without being seen by the animals and in complete safety. The front of The Hide has an expanded metal grid which is completely open and out of sight but can be quickly dropped if anyone is feeling nervous. OUR TIPS The pathways, tunnel and hide are all lit at night so are available for use by guests 24 hours a day. Those guests with walkers and in wheelchairs can also use The Hide as the walkway has ramps that ensure ease of access. Viewing of all the visiting animals and birds close up is truly spectacular and offers a whole new dimension in game viewing.

Kuname Lodge Kuname Lodge A small, unashamedly exclusive, luxury safari lodge set in the Karongwe Big 5 Private Game Reserve Kuname-outdoor-lounge.jpeg kuname-private-game-reserve-4.jpg kuname-exclusive-luxury-safari-lodge-gallery-2.jpeg Kuname-outdoor-lounge.jpeg 1/19 Location Karongwe Big 5 Reserve, overlooking the majestic Drakensberg mountain range in the Limpopo Province. DESCRIPTION: Set in the Limpopo Province, Kuname Lodge is a small, unashamedly exclusive, luxury safari lodge set in about 9 000 hectares of pristine African bush in the Karongwe Private Game Reserve. Bordered by an awesome backdrop of the towering majestic Drakensberg mountain range in the west and set in game-rich, lush, riverine vegetation, this lodge has a variety of breathtaking views, diverse landscapes and offers excellent Big Five game-viewing and bird watching opportunities. It really is a haven for those in search of a high quality and romantic bush experience! As you enter the lodge for the first time you will be blown away by the stunningly pretty location, with the lodge nestled in a beautiful forest glade with its swimming pool perched over a picturesque river bed. Built on the banks of the Kuvjename River, Kuname Lodge boasts 4 Luxury Suites and 1Premier Suite, all of them air-conditioned chalets nestled in the shade of the lovely riverine forest. The thatched chalets are elegant yet still quite rustic - built from natural materials of hewn rock and fine woods, they’re tastefully decorated with original arts and crafts to give that real feeling of Africa. One of the highlights for us is that each suite features an en-suite bathroom which includes an outdoor shower and for the more adventurous there's even an outdoor bath - the perfect spot to enjoy a romantic soak in a bath of bubbles lit only by candles and a canopy of stars! With just 5 rooms, this is truly a lodge where you can relax in a tranquil environment surrounded by the raw beauty of the African bush – and you can take it all in from your inviting private wooden deck. The main lodge houses a large, elegant lounge and dining area and cozy bar, which lead onto an elevated outdoor viewing deck which have fantastic views of the river and mountains. It's the perfect spot to relax with a ice cold drink whilst looking out for game in the riverbed below. A gorgeous infinity rock pool on the deck offers the ideal setting to escape from the heat of the day - if you're lucky you might even see a herd of elephants cross the river whilst you’re busy doing your own wallowing! Dining at Kuname is a delight with every meal an unforgettable occasion. Here you can take in the earthly scents of the African bush with a braai or a more elegant bush dinner can be savoured either around the roaring fire in the boma, on the wooden viewing deck or in the more formal inside dining room – or a more intimate dinner can be enjoyed for couples who wish to dine alone in the beautifully designed wine cellar! Traversing over 9000 hectares of prime bushveld with lovely views of the escarpment as your constant backdrop, Kuname is home to the Big Five as well as a wealth of other creatures – the Karongwe reserve is very well watered with 4 rivers including the perennial Makhutsi River flowing through the reserve. This enhances the game carrying capacity of the land as well as providing stunning riverine vegetation – add in the magnificent views of the towering Drakensberg escarpment and, dare we say it, but Karongwe provides arguably better game viewing and more pretty scenery than many of the better known private reserves in the lowveld! Whilst 9000 hectares is fairly small compared to some other reserves, we never even came close to traversing the whole reserve in the 4 days we spent there, so it feels plenty big enough. The quality of the game viewing we enjoyed was fantastic, with great sightings of a number of different leopards and the chance to track wild cheetah on foot being memorable highlights! Just one point to note is that the excellent last minute rates at the Karongwe lodges just include a single game drive a day to keep costs down – you are obviously free to go on the other daily game drive at a reasonable extra cost (this is actually quite a sensible approach as many people end up skipping at least one game drive as they fancy sleeping in for example!) Bush walks at Kuname are a chance to step into a world that few get the opportunity to experience and where you get to see animals at their own level. You’ll also learn about traditional medicinal plants from your Shangaan tracker, not to mention see veld skills in action that have been passed down from generation to generation! Afterwards retreat to the lodge and enjoy the stunning scenic backdrop as you sip a glass of champagne beside the cool, clear waters of the rock pool - or spend a lazy afternoon browsing the library while you unwind. Kuname Lodge will touch you deeply, rejuvenate you and soothe your soul, and quite frankly you will be blown away how the staff make you feel like a member of their ‘family' and treat you like royalty from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart! The hosting here is wonderfully warm and personal and makes Kuname one of our favourite lodges of all! RATE INCLUDES: Accommodation All meals 2 game drives daily with complementary sundowner HIGHLIGHTS: Kuname boasts a wonderfull location – nestled in a gorgeous riverine forest overlooking a riverbed with the nearby Drakensberg mountains making for a magnificent backdrop! OUR TIPS: As the furthest west of the lowveld reserves it is closer to Gauteng than most of the other private reserves in the greater Kruger area.
